TRAINING OFFERED BY TYGERBERG HOSPICE
We offer palliative care courses intended to equip interdisciplinary teams, carers and families with the requisite skills, knowledge, and competencies in managing patients with life-threatening illnesses, with a view to improving quality of life for the patient and family. The training focuses on the physical, psychosocial, and spiritual care.
This includes understanding of palliative care, pain and symptom management, spirituality in palliative care, culturally sensitive care, loss, grief and bereavement and care for the caregiver.
The training is in line with HPCA standards and facilitators are approved by HPCA.
We have a beautiful training venue in Kuilsriver, with strict COVID-19 adherence in place.
The training we can offer includes the following:
- Introduction to Palliative Care for Professional Healthcare Professionals from all clinical settings course. (Nurses, doctors, social workers, counsellors, psychologists, physiotherapists, OTs etc.) The learning material and certificate is provided by HPCA. (30 CPD points). The 40-hour course is face-to-face and includes the principles of palliative care, ethics, pain and symptom management, end-of-life care, communication and support to family, spiritual and cultural aspects, loss, grief and bereavement.
- Introduction to Palliative Care to Carers of palliative patients as developed by UCT. This can include homebased carers as well as family members or private carers. Topics include overview, infection control in the home environment, symptom management at home: what family and caregivers need to know, practical tips for care at home, including: washing a bed bound patient, pressure care (including changing linen with a patient in bed), mouth care, toileting, feeding, taking medication, end of life: changes to expect and what to do if your loved one dies at home during the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Care for the Carers is a program developed to support caregivers (both state and private) focusing on debriefing, emotional support, compassion fatigue and resilience, also including the stress-reaction of working in a COVID-19 pandemic.
